Feeding the soul

Music

I consider music to be food for the soul and in this I am probably not the only one. I don't think I could live without it, as it is such a great part of my life.
I guess that's why I saved a place on my site for this.

By clicking any of the links above, you will find information on gigs I've attended (or am attending), my collection and the recent purchases and my own projects.

What's on the menu?

It has always been difficult for me to name all of my favourite bands. I don't think I can possibly list all of them.
Usually I stick to my "Current favourites". As anyone can tell you, it changes as the years go by.

When I was young you'd catch me listening to Backstreet Boys. It's funny, I feel little shame in admitting that, as I still believe they were the best boyband out there in my time. I still listen to it occasionally, for, despite the cheesiness, I like the simplicity of the songs

I think my first major shift in taste came with the discovery of none less than Within Temptation. I think it was around 2001. They were my step up to metal music, so to speak.
Bands like Epica and Nightwish soon followed and the latter turned into my top favourite for the 5 or so years that followed.
In those years I also started listening to the male fronted metal, power metal, mostly. For example - Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica and Kamelot. Interestingly enough, Sonata Arctica still hits my CD-player frequently.

The second somewhat less huge, but still noticable, shift in taste arrived with the Pain of Salvation DVD named "BE" in 2005. I don't think I've heard a more versatile band since. In any case, they introduced me to the "Progressive" metal and rock.
I soon found out there are only few progressive bands that could actually be called progressive (if you follow me). I grew bored of the others pretty quick. Also, the outstanding quality of Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation) his vocals and expression, raised the importancy of the vocalist even more for me.

Now, my "Current favourites" could be considered Pain of Salvation and Porcupine Tree. However, to say that I only like metal music would be untrue. I like my share of Alan Parsons, Jeff Buckley and Tori Amos - to name a few. I also have a thing for W.A. Mozart.

Movies and more

Other things that feeds the soul are good movies, TV-series and comedy. It can provide excellent entertainment, and when you find the kind that lifts your spirit, it can help you heal, to some extend.
In the above-mentioned sections you'll also find the fairs, plays and comedy-shows I attended or will attend.

When I think of good movies, the first to pop up is The Lord of the Rings-trilogy. Aside from that, personally, I really enjoy watching either of the movies starring Johnny Depp.
After mentioning that, it might be difficult to believe I'm one who loves movies that make you think. However, it's true. If I were to list my favorites, you would find things like Memento and Amadeus.

TV-series are an entirely different story.
I hardly ever watch TV, because most of today's programs are full of the worst possible bull****. Of course, there are exceptions, but still, when I watch TV-series, it's mostly on DVD. One of the things I really like watching is House M.D.. I find the performance of Hugh Laurie striking and it provides a good laugh. Another thing I like are the "old" (at least relatively) English crime-series like Frost, Morse and Lewis. Now that is good quality TV.

Then there's comedy. It's a cliché, but I think laughter really is the best medicine.
Now, there's one thing I am absolutely addicted to; and that's De Lama's. It's a stand-up/improvisation-comedy TV-show that was (or maybe still is) very popular in Holland. They no longer exist as De Lama's, as the show ended last year. But I'm surely following the moves of the individual members Tijl Beckand and Ruben Nicolai.
I also like Monty Python and the comedians Arie Koomen, Alex Agnew, Najib Amhali, Hans Liberg and Jeff Dunham
